Plants have a longer, more complex life cycle than animals do: they begin in a combined, diploid organism called a sporophyte, which produces spores. The spores grow into two types of gametophytes, one (the female kind) produces large gametes while the other kind (the male kind) produces small gametes. When the two gametes unite, the resulting organism grows into a new sporophyte.
I wanted to write a gentle and calming ostinato piece inspired by the patience, stillness, and stability of a plant's way of life, but when I did my research I thought the form of the piece should reflect the plant's life cycle as well.
